6 Things a Homeowner Should Know Before Renting a Bounce House
1. Insurance
Ensure that the company you rent your bounce house or inflatable from has the appropriate insurance coverage for both the business and its employees. They should be able to provide a certificate of liability and workers' compensation insurance upon request. Many people are unaware that if an uninsured worker, subcontractor, or even a helper gets injured on your property, it can lead to significant issues for the homeowner, not just the rental company.
2. Safety
Safety is paramount! Every inflatable ride should have an attendant, and most companies offer this as an optional service. If you decide not to hire one, it’s crucial to designate an adult who will be present to review the safety guidelines and take on the role of an attendant. This person will be responsible for supervising the children and ensuring that the rules posted on the front of the unit are followed. Wind conditions also play a critical role in safety. If wind speeds exceed 15 mph, all participants should exit, and the unit should be deflated immediately. Although thousands of inflatables are rented and used safely across the United States every day, accidents usually occur when safety rules and manufacturer guidelines aren’t followed. Adhering to the manufacturer's instructions and using a professionally installed unit can significantly lower the risk of injury and keep your event safe and enjoyable.
3. Setup Area
Some of the larger bounce houses, combo units, and water slides require a substantial amount of space. Homeowners need to ensure there is a setup area within 100 feet of a dedicated 20-amp outlet, free from other electrical demands. While many companies prefer to set up on grass, setups on concrete or pavement can be accommodated using sandbags. However, most companies will not set up on gravel or rough terrain. It’s also essential to have sufficient space not only on the ground but also above the unit, as some are quite tall and need clearance from overhanging trees and power lines. The required setup area and dimensions are typically provided on the rental company’s website.
4. Stake Clearance
After identifying a safe area above ground for setup, it’s equally important to consider what lies beneath. Smaller bounce houses use stakes that are 5/8" x 18" with a hook on top, while larger units and water slides may require stakes ranging from 24" to 36". Before driving any stakes into the ground, it’s advisable to contact local utility companies to have underground lines marked, preventing potential damage.
5. Clean Inflatables
It’s important to ensure that the inflatable unit is clean. Reputable rental companies clean and sanitize their units regularly, often before or after each use. This practice is essential to provide a safe and clean experience for customers.
Water Slides
When renting a water slide or any inflatable that uses water, expect the cost to be slightly higher than dry units. Water inflatables become significantly heavier when wet, and after the rental, they must be inflated again until completely dry, then cleaned, disinfected, and rolled up for storage. This process can take several hours depending on the size of the unit, which is why water slides generally cost more than other inflatables.
